We are currently in production on a full-length documentary:
Septima: From A to Z
As Charleston, South Carolina’s PURE Theatre brings the story of civil rights hero Septima P. Clark to unconventional performance spaces throughout the region, we travel with their cast and crew, celebrating the achievements of this under-appreciated Charlestonian, and exploring the impact that Clark continues to have in the ongoing battle over voting rights.
In this feature length documentary, we learn about Clark, described by Martin Luther King, Jr. as the ‘mother of the Movement,’ both through recreations via PURE’s rehearsals and performances, and through interviews with broad range of people (historians, family, friends, and community members) who have been influenced by Ms. Clark both personally and by her impactful style of activism. We will carefully select excerpts that provide interesting insights, rather than mere praise, and especially those that connect clearly to the contemporary issues that our society faces. We do not aim to produce a comprehensive historical document but, rather, an inspiring call to action and to love.
